0 Thursday's Substitute Class October 25th

Hi 7th Graders, I'm especially sad I'll be missing all of you today because I think you all will have fun with today's lesson, and I won't get to see you complete it! Please do your best and follow ALL instructions below to complete today's lesson.  I will expect a great report from your substitute because I know ALL of you are fantastic students.  Please help each other if someone near you is confused.

1.
During class today, you will have the privilege of participating in a “mock” or pretend election.   Please start by watching, "The History of Voting."

2.
The entire student population of BIS will be taking part in this "election". I believe you have been going over the election in class, and hopefully you are feeling pretty informed and are ready to vote and voice your opinions!

Next to each of your workstations you will find a document taking you through the steps of voting.  You will also find this document below.  Please take this seriously and remember voting is a private matter.  You shouldn’t be sharing and comparing with your neighbors. Please click on this Google doc, Voting Instructions to get started.  Hint:  You may need to paste the teacher code in a couple of times if you are getting an "invalid code" message. Return to my blog when you are done.

*If you get a bad gateway error, go to the next step below, and try voting again at the end of class.*

3. Once you are done with voting, you will start doing a little research that will ultimately end in you creating placemarks in Google Earth. First you need to choose three locations you would like to visit anywhere in the world, sky or ocean.  Or choose places you have been and loved!Think of landmarks, or seven great wonders of the world, or Disney World! Anywhere you want!
**Very Important:  There is a check-in sheet next to your computer, you MAY NOT choose any place that has  already been listed on YOUR computer's check-in sheet

4. Then, you will need to do some quick research on your location from one of the websites listed below.  You can not use Wikipedia to use facts, please use the list below. Try to find facts that are interesting to you. You need to find at least four facts for each location and put them into YOUR OWN words.  NO PLAGIARISM please. You can type into a word document using Google Docs or just hand write them on scrap paper.

List of Fact Links

5. Next, you will open up Google Earth off of your desktop.  You will be creating placemarks at your three locations.  Inside of each placemark you will type the facts you have found.  Please use correct spelling and grammar.  **If you don't know how to create a placemark, there is a paper resource by your desk and a video below that you can watch. They are very easy to create.  If you still need more help with Google Earth, just scroll down farther to Wednesday sub class for more Google Earth Links.

Link to Place Marks & Tours Video

6. When you are done creating your placemark, you MUST fill out the computer check-in sheet by your computer.  Write your name and the three locations you created placemarks at.  I will be checking these and your placemarks.  Please leave the sheet by your computer.

7.  Lastly, you can return to Google Earth and explore, or check out the link below to try out a couple games that use Google Earth technology.  These are your only options, please do not do anything else.

0 Wednesday 7A Substitute Class

Hello 7th Graders.  I'm sorry I will be missing you today, but I can't wait to show you some of the cool things I learn at this technology conference! Please do your best today and tomorrow for your Sub.  I left a note telling her how great your class is, please don't disappoint.

Follow ALL the steps below to complete today's class.  Tomorrow, there will be a new post for tomorrow's class and you will follow ALL of those instructions.

1. Please log into your Diigo accounts.  Check your school sites table if you don't remember the log-in.  Most likely, it is something like lastname_first name18 and your ID +00.  You can always put in your school email address and click the "forgot password" button if you need to. (Then you will have to check your email in Google Apps to reset the password.)

2.  You need to make sure you have the following websites bookmarked and TAGGED into your Diigo accounts. Ask a classmate if you don't remember how to bookmark.  Just click bookmark in the toolbar at the top of screen once logged in, then fill in box.

                          - Google Apps
                          - BIS Home Page
                          - 7th Grade Technology Blog
                          - Glogster EDU
                          - X2 Student Grade Portal
                          - Discovery Education
                          - Cool Tools for School Wiki
3. Once all sites are bookmarked and tagged, please log out of your Diigo Accounts

4. Next, you will watch video tutorials on Google Earth techniques.  Even if you think you know how to do everything, I want you to watch at LEAST five of the videos below.  They are only about 1-2 minutes long each.  When you are done watching the videos, you will apply the skills you have learned in Google Earth.  (Open Google Earth off your desktop) Links for the videos are below.  There are also Gallery links to explore when you are done with the videos. Click on a gallery you want to view, for example the Titantic, then click "view in Google Earth" on the top right, then when the box comes up, click "open in Google Earth."  There are some really cool galleries.

**Do NOT just search for your house, you need to try out different things, do a 3D tour, go on the moon, Mars, and sky etc. **

0 Creating Your New Diigo Account

Do you remember Diigo from last year?  It is one of my FAVORITE resources! In case you need a refresher, please watch the video below.

Last year your Diigo accounts belonged to your teacher because you were under 13.  Now that you are in 7th grade you can have your own accounts using your Google email address.  Please follow the steps on here if you get lost.

1. Go to Diigo.com
2. Click on Join Diigo in the top right corner
3. Please make your username and password the following:
lastname_firstname18
School ID +00
**If your name is to long to be a user name, you will need to figure out a way to shorten it, but still remember it easily.
4. The email address you will use is your school Google one. lastname_firstname18@mybps.me
5. You need to type the weird words at the bottom in to prove you aren't a robot
6. Enter your Diigo account information into your school sites table and have it checked by me.
7. Log-in to your Google account and activate Diigo by taking the link in the email from them.
8. Bookmark and tag the sites in your school sites table
9. Bookmark and tag any other sites you love!
10. Do NOT forget to log out of Diigo

Great Work! I hope you eventually use and love Diigo as much as I do!

0 If You Complete Your Digital Story....

You spoke and we listened!  We decided to have all students create a second blog for school work.  You will be encouraged to continue blogging about your passions on your original blog.  Please remember this is connected to a school account, you BPS Blogging and Commenting Guidelines should be followed.  You should also be sure the content is school appropriate!
You will need to go to your Blogger Dashboard and “create a new blog”.  The new interface looks a little bit different, but if you look around you will be able to find this orange tab.  Please name your school blog in the following manner:
This example would be if I were a student creating a blog:
Name of Blog:   Caitlyn’s School Blog
                      URL:   caitlynsschoolblog(.blogspot.com)
**You may need to add the first initial of your last name or a symbol if you have a common first name.  You will know as the new interface will tell you automatically if that URL is not available.*
You will need to choose a template which allows you to make multiple pages easily.
You can now work on the design of your blog.  Please be sure to create the following pages:
  1. Home (this will be automatically created and the only page on which you can create a “real post”  I would like you to create a post telling your new teachers a little bit about you. You may want to include your strengths and weaknesses in school, likes and dislikes, etc...
  2. English
  3. Math
  4. Science
  5. Social Studies
  6. Technology
**You may delete the Technology page from your other blog.  You could put your podcast post on your new blog if you’d like.
You may play around with design, colors, widgets, etc....
Be sure to “Apply” and “Save” as you go!!

Please take the survey below.  It should only take a few minutes and it is completely anonymous.  Please be honest, your feedback is really important to me.

Student Feedback Survey

Surveys are a useful way to gather information, analyze it, and use it to make a change for the better.  You can also use surveys to see what is popular. We are going to create a survey as a class using a shared form.  When I ask you to, you will take the link that belongs to your class, and type in a question with responses. You may also edit a question that is already on the form if you think it is needed.

When we get back from vacation, we will take a survey belonging to another 7th grade class.

--->  This week you will check out Pamela Fox’s blog post, “Creating a Wordsearch Using Google Spreadsheet.” First you will need to brainstorm 15 words about a particular subject. It can be anything appropriate for school, but does not have to be school related. Once you have created your list of words, you will follow the instructions at the link above. Read carefully and think before asking questions. If you are using your effective effort strategies, you should be able to do this on your own. I will give you a couple of hints below:

Hint #1: Be sure to name your spreadsheet when you create it.
Hint #2: What is a URL and where do you find it?
**You actually can skip this step; as there is a gadget for wordsearches now.**
Hint #3: You may need to enlarge or expand your wordsearch by
grabbing a corner and dragging so you can see it all.
